A couple of useful articles on calf pain:

From the first article: “Common causes can be introducing hill or speed work, increasing weekly mileage and increasing training intensity….” I think there can be a particular risk during the weeks leading up to a race – like the Birmingham Half Marathon – especially if trying for a PB, when several if not all of these factors can apply, and if changes have been too rapid then any strains will only be aggravated further during the race itself.
